Starting Grade Nine

Stepping into a new school with what seems like hundreds of unrecognizable people surrounding you may seem like the worst nightmare for someone entering grade nine. But, in a couple of weeks, you’ll laugh thinking about how nervous you were on that very first day of school and how much more comfortable you are now. So, here are some tips to get you to the place where you will be more than comfortable with being a grade nine in a new school!

Know your learning style

Once you understand what your learning style is, it will help you when studying for tests and exams. Don’t worry though if it takes a little time to figure this out. Whether you’re a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner, there are various methods for you to study and once you grasp how you learn best, there will be nothing stopping you from acing your next test!

Read for pleasure

Now, you might be wondering why you would read for pleasure when you already read plenty for school purposes. Well, reading for your own enjoyment can help you learn more about yourself and what you’re interested in. As a grade nine, it is important to take steps towards figuring out your identity. Reading will also help build your vocabulary and writing skills.

Use the resources

Learn about the resources your school offers and don’t be afraid to use them. They are there to help you!

Get to know your teachers

Come to class with a positive attitude and be respectful to your teachers. Teachers will always have your best interests at heart and help you a lot so it’s important to be kind to them as well. Talk to teachers too – they love talking to their students more than you might initially realize.

Show school spirit

Join clubs

Everyone says this but not everyone truly realizes how important is it to join clubs that you are interested in. When you join a club, you’re one step closer to making a new friend or learning a new hobby.

Take care of yourself

Secondary school can be a big jump from elementary school, and you might need to work a little harder too. But don’t forget to take care of your mental health. Exercise, sleep well, eat healthily and treat yourself once in a while!

Work ethic

Build a good work ethic as a foundation for your high school career. A great work ethic can take you a long way!

High school passes by in a flash, but you won’t really understand this once you’re in grade 12 yourself. So, make the most of your grade nine-year and have fun!
